What’s this? Tasty, colourful little beans packed full of energy and flavour? Hike.Mountain.Trail give you the low-down as we chow-down on the portable power that is Jelly Belly SPORT BEANS!

Snacks. They’re really important when it comes to long hikes; they help maintain your energy levels. There are an abundance of snacks out there that are suited to hiking and outdoor exploits such as trail mix, energy drinks, all sorts of sweets, etc., (we will be reviewing beef jerky soon, so keep a lookout for that).

For our recent jaunt up Pen y Ghent in the Yorkshire Dales, Sara, Pingu (Jane), and I took along a few packets of Jelly Belly’s Sport Beans (their assorted mix pack) for nutritional company. How did they fair? How did we find them? And did we end up running up Pen y Ghent, supercharged with portable Power®? Read on…

Everyone must have heard of Jelly Belly; they make those absolutely scrummy jelly beans that come in countless interesting flavours. But how many knew that Jelly Belly did an energising Sport Bean, specifically designed to help replace lost nutrients during times of intense activities and sports.

Each 28g packet of Sport Beans contains approximately 15 jelly beans of assorted flavours – blackcurrant, lemon-lime, fruit punch, and raspberry. Each one provides:

  • Carbohydrates
  • Electrolytes (namely sodium and potassium) which are lost through sweating
  • Vitamins B1, B2, B3 (which help burn carbs and fat)

Sport Beans are easy to use and they taste great, too!

Before workout – Eat one packet about 30 minutes before exercise with 1-2 cups of water.
During workout – Eat as needed, aiming for one packet every 45 minutes of activity.
After workout – Eat to help replenish muscle stores of carbohydrates. As always, consume with water to replace fluids lost through sweat.

What is the Hike.Mountain.Trail verdict?

“I really liked them! The flavours are really good and robust, with the fruit punch Sport Bean being my favourite. The lemon-lime flavour is quite tangy, but in a nice make-your-tabs-laugh kind of way. They are pretty chewy, but not to the point where they stick to your teeth for the next two days after eating them.” – Phil
